Volunteer Missionary- West Indies Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
On June 16th, 2010 I began my service as a volunteer missionary for The Church of Jesus of Latter-Day Saints. I was called on March 20th, 2010 to serve in the West Indies Mission , located at the southern end of the Caribbean islands, also including three countries on the mainland of South America, east of Venezuela. The specific countries included in the West Indies Mission are: St. Martin, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guyana. The mission of, well, The Mission was to share our religious beliefs with the people of the West Indies, as well as to provide as much humanitarian support as possible. Daily activities included teaching our religious beliefs and values, offering varied service, promoting abstinence programs to fight the HIV/AIDS issues in the region, providing humanitarian aid to hospitals, charities, and other organizations, and encouraging family service programs geared toward non-abusive family relationships.
During the course of my mission I was assigned several leadership responsibilities including District Leader, Trainer, and Senior Companion. As a District Leader I was assigned to teach, train, motivate, supervise, and report on 6-8 missionaries in their separate areas. This included organizing and conducting weekly meetings, conducting daily phone calls to collect information concerning progress and struggles with missionaries, and recording and reporting information to the appropriate leaders. I also attended monthly Mission-wide meetings to discuss the progress of the mission, challenges, and possible avenues of improvement. As a Trainer I was assigned to serve with new or struggling missionaries on a one-on-one basis, to assist in teaching them and helping them develop the skills necessary to progress in their missionary duties and responsibilities. As a Senior Companion my duty was to take the lead and initiative in the work, including daily planning and reporting, lesson plans, goals, tracking progress, practicing skills, and maintaining focus. I trained far more frequently than I was a District Leader or Senior Companion, and at one point I was a Trainer, District Leader, and Senior Companion simultaneously.
I learned a great deal during my mission, and the interpersonal skills, work ethic, and teaching techniques have benefitted me immensely, even to this day.
